PACKING YOURSELF

Living Room / Family Room

Free packing tips for packing yourself. Great help for packing the living room and/or the family room.

The moving boxes you will use for these rooms are 3 cube, 4.5 cube, dishpack, and book carton (1.5 cube). Make up at least one of each.

The usual items are:

* lamps

* stereo equipment

* CD's and video tapes

* books

* pillows

* toys

* decor.

* mirrors & pictures

Lamps

Stereo Equipment

These components are quite fragile, so if you don't have the original boxes with Styrofoam, use dishpacks with lots of paper. After you put a cushion layer on the bottom, put the heaviest component, followed by the other components, with lots of paper or cardboard in between for protection. Check to be sure you've packed all the cables and wires in this box so you won't have to search for them when it comes time to hook everything back up.

CD's, Tapes, And Books

CD's, tapes, and books: pack these in 1.5 book cartons. Tapes can be packed the way they are, (if they are in a video case). I usually take a small handful of CD's and wrap them in paper and then pack on their edge. Books are best packed on their edge also, with the binding edge facing upward. You will want to pack these boxes tight. So if there are voids in the box, stuff them with paper.

Always pack all your boxes full and tight, they travel much better this way. If a box isn't quite full, finish it off with a blanket, towel, or paper. Then when the boxes are stacked, they will not topple over because the bottom one gave way because it was not packed full.

Misc. (pillows, toys, decor)

Toys, and decor: When packing yourself, put these items in 3 or 4.5 cube cartons. Use plenty of paper or soft stuff (maybe the pillows) to get the items packed safely.

TIP: Make sure there are no sharp edges that will damage the soft items if in fact you do use pillows or blankets for padding.

Records and photos (and photo albums) should be packed in 1.5 cube cartons as they are heavy.

Mirrors And Pictures

These items are best wrapped in the large paper pads available from moving companies or from a moving materials supply company like, U-Haul, or Pioneer Packing.

Then they will be put into Mirror Packs with a layer of cushioning paper on the bottom, sides, and top.

Tape the first part of the mirror pack closed, pinching the mirror or picture inside so it cannot shift around.

When loading these boxes into the moving truck or van, be sure to keep them on their edge, in other words, DO NOT lay them down flat. And they will travel just fine and arrive without being broken.
