PACKING YOURSELF

Garage

When packing yourself, the garage may seem like an overwhelming task, but don't worry, I'll help you through this area too!

You will use many different sizes of moving boxes in this area.

I usually make up at least one each of these different sizes of moving boxes:

* a book ctn.

* 3 cu.

* 4.5 cu.

* wardrobe ctn.

You may also use lamp cartons and 6 cubes in the garage.

You will try to start in one corner of the garage and work your way all around to the finish line!!

When packing any box, it's liking putting a puzzle together. Sometimes it goes together just perfect, and sometimes not. Oh, well, just fill that hole with some paper if you need to! It's not worth wasting time and fretting over. ;-)

The large items like the seed spreader, chainsaw, and long garden tools don't have to go into boxes; just work on all the smaller items.

Hand and power tools will go into the small book cartons. Larger items like extension cords, tarps, lawn and holiday decor, watering can, etc. can be packed into 3 & 4.5 cube cartons. Make sure you do not pack any of the non-allowables, see THE DO NOT PACK LIST.

Sometimes a large wardrobe carton is ideal for the tent, folding camp chairs, and some long (but not too heavy) tools.

When packing yourself and using a wardrobe carton for something other than hanging clothes, you will still put the hanging bar in the top. This will help strengthen your box and allow you to stack another one on top of it when loading the truck.

TIP: As you are packing in each room, stack the boxes in one area along a wall or someplace so it is not in your way.

Put heavy boxes on the bottom and go lighter, and lighter, toward the top. Also it usually is not a good idea to put all boxes in one room unless you make it so any box is available to you as you're loading the truck.

Loading is like putting a puzzle together, too. So if there is a hole to fill (like under the desk, or above the china cabinet) you will want to find a box to put there. And if all the boxes are all in one room, you may not be able to get that perfect box, because it's way in the back!

I know many moving tips suggest to load ALL the boxes first so they will be last off the truck. They suggest this so boxes aren't in the way of placing the furniture.

But believe me, it's much easier and it makes better use of the space available to load the boxes as you go along. You can't put your puzzle together if you don't have the right pieces! :-)

Just remember to keep the boxes out of the way as you're unloading them into the new house, so you will be able to place the furniture where you want.

I hope these tips for packing yourself have been helpful.
