These Free Professional Packing Tips will guide you through this part of your move whether you're doing the packing yourself or a moving company is doing the packing.
Moving Company's Packing
Choose a date, hopefully at least 2 months from now, that you want to move.
Then this moving service packing guide will explain in detail what to expect from the moving company, and what is expected of you.
If you've never moved with a moving company before,
The
Do Not Pack Checklist
pertains to either you doing the packing or a moving company doing the packing. Check it over so you will be familiar with the items on this list. And when it comes time to pack the boxes, you'll be ready.
Packing Yourself
Moving is not as easy as some people think. You don't just throw everything in a box and move! :-) So follow these packing tips.
Where Do I Start?
Well ahead of moving day you will start packing. Print out the
Timeline Countdown,
if you haven't already done so. It will help you stay on track.
If you aren't planning to entertain, you can probably pack up the dining room. And a lot of items in the kitchen that are not in daily use can be packed. Start using up food so there's not a lot to pack near the end.
Box Sizes
* 1.5 cube carton Use this for all books, files, heavy tools, canned food.
The heavier the item, the smaller the box.
* 3 cube This medium size will be used for most items. It is a good size to carry and to move around.
* 4.5 cube This is like the 3 cube, but taller. Use this for bedding, pans to long for a 3 cube, games, and large but lightweight things.
* 6 cube This will be used to pack large toys, wicker baskets, bean bag chairs and other items too large for any other box.
* Dishpack This is a heavy duty box for packing all dishes, china, pottery, statues, ceramic lamps, and all glass items.
* Wardrobe This tall box has a hanging bar at the top so you can just transfer all your hanging clothes to it.
* Mirror Packs These are special 2 piece or 4 piece cartons for packing all your pictures and mirrors (that are too large for a Dishpack)
* Lamp Box This is a tall box for floor lamps, rolled-up rugs, flags, tall speakers, gift wrap, etc.
There are also boxes for TV's, microwaves, and mattresses if you wish to use them. You will also need newsprint, tape, tissue, and bubble wrap.

When making up these boxes, you fold down the flaps BEFORE squaring up the box (while it is still flat, that is).
Then open the box and securely tape the bottom shut (2 or 3 strips of tape should be sufficient).
This keeps the flaps out of your way while packing. And you will know exactly when the box is full. A sharp tug will break the flap connector tabs so you can close the box. Do NOT just cross fold the flaps, as they could easily come undone.
Also tape the side seams, if you wish, especially if the boxes are going to be put into storage. You don't want any little creepy crawlers getting into your clothes, or worse into your foodstuffs.
To make up a used moving box (where the tabs are already broken), just put a piece of packing tape (about 6-8 inches long), where the tabs used to be, and that will keep the flaps out or your way.
